Google Gemini Introduces Persistent Conversation Threads for Workspace Users

Google has rolled out persistent conversation threads for Gemini for Google Workspace subscribers, allowing users to maintain long-running AI conversations that persist across sessions within the Google ecosystem. Unlike standard Gemini conversations that reset with each new chat, persistent threads retain full conversation history and can reference previous turns from days or weeks earlier.

The feature integrates with Google Drive, automatically surfacing documents and files that are contextually relevant to the ongoing thread topic. A product manager working on a product roadmap in a persistent Gemini thread, for instance, would have previous strategy conversations, market research documents, and competitive analysis automatically available as context without manual re-attachment.

Workspace administrators gain visibility into active persistent threads across their organization through the Admin Console, with the ability to set retention limits and export thread histories for compliance purposes. The retention controls directly address enterprise compliance requirements that have previously been a barrier to deploying AI tools in regulated industries.

The introduction of persistent threads by Google, following similar moves by OpenAI and Anthropic, represents an industry-wide acknowledgment that session-limited AI is no longer sufficient for professional use cases. Users who work across multiple AI platforms, however, continue to find that native memory solutions are siloed — a Google thread doesn't help with Claude context, and vice versa. The cross-platform conversation memory category remains an open opportunity.
