Microsoft Copilot Adds Enterprise Conversation Archiving and E-Discovery

Microsoft has announced integration between Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Purview, its compliance and governance platform, enabling enterprise organizations to archive AI conversation logs alongside email, Teams messages, and SharePoint content. The integration allows IT administrators to apply the same retention policies, legal hold capabilities, and e-discovery searches to Copilot interactions that have governed electronic communications for over a decade.

The Purview integration captures all Copilot conversations — including document summarization sessions, email drafting assistance, and Teams meeting summaries — in a tamper-evident format stored in Exchange Online infrastructure. Organizations with existing Purview licensing can activate the Copilot connector without additional infrastructure changes.

Legal and compliance teams at major enterprises have identified Copilot conversation capture as a critical gap in their records management programs. The Purview integration directly addresses audit readiness for AI-assisted decision-making, a requirement that legal counsel has increasingly flagged as enterprise AI adoption accelerates.

The development signals that major platform vendors are beginning to treat AI conversation archiving as a first-class compliance requirement rather than an afterthought.
